On January 14, 2020, Microsoft released the latest official security update for Windows 7. At the same time, Microsoft officially discontinued support for this operating system. What does it mean for users?
According to the current statistics up to 30% of desktop computers is now running on Windows 7. Even though computers with Windows 7 will continue to work, upgrade to Windows 10 is strongly recommended after discontinuation of the support. Microsoft customer service is no longer providing Windows 7 technical support and what's even more important, they will no longer provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safe. Therefore, PCs running on Windows 7 will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. This vulnerability will gradually increase over time.
Tips for upgrading to Windows 10:
- Make sure the device on which you want to install the new system meets the system requirements for installing Windows 10.
- For most Windows 7 users, moving to a new device with Windows 10 is recommended. But you can also upgrade existing to the latest version of Windows 10. The Windows 10 free upgrade offer ended on July 29, 2016. However, many internet users confirm that devices with legitimate Windows 7 license could be upgraded to Windows 10 for free using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. However, this procedure cannot be officially recommended.
- Back up all important data before updating. Download your files using OneDrive, Backup and Restore feature or external storage device.
Microsoft will provide Office 365 users, who will continue to use Windows 7, with security updates for Office 365 until January 2023. But updates won't include any new features. Therefore, upgrading to Windows 10 is not a necessary but highly recommended option for Office 365 functionality. In any case, nothing changes for eWay-CRM users, it will continue work.
